[While this goes on, Saturn is patting Sharpedo encouragingly and then recalling it into its ball to let out Toxicroak instead. He's been on Team Sharpedo thus far, but he's too closely familiar with Skuntank as a Pokemon, and he wants that sweet sweet immunity to being poisoned.]

I see. Incidentally, all of this is you parroting back Ingo's insecurities that this is the way he sees you, correct?

I'll let you have a +1 for this savvy foresight in the matchup even though it's not directly in the mechanics.

"What are you talking about?! I'm only telling the truth! I've said it a million times! And I'm saying it now! Do you think I am a liar?!"

You must be rather fixated on Ingo to have had this unsolicited conversation about him a million times. Go, Toxicroak! I've heard all I need to hear.

[Toxicroak is thrilled to finally have a chance at battle, and leaps forward to rattle threateningly at Skuntank. Heeeey, Brother! She too knows what Skuntank is all about.

"Th—They're the ones who brought him to the Highlands when that's where I already was!! I never wanted to interact with that man!! Skuntank!! Show him the meaning of silent but deadly!!"

Skuntank makes another grunt which is something like, Let's get this over with. Night Slash time! How do YOU like it!!

[SHE'S A FIGHTING TYPE SO SHE LIKES IT FINE. I mean it's not great or anything. She does take damage! But after recoiling a little, she croaks out another vicious laugh: Awww, Stinky's no fun!]

Toxicroak, Brick Break!

[It's not supereffective but at least it gets STAB.]

That smarts! Skuntank is going to use a Flamethrower before succumbing to Toxicroak's onslaught.

[Luckily Saturn's Toxicroak doesn't have Dry Skin, but that also still smarts, and she's definitely taken some damage by the time Skuntank goes down. Saturn goes over to rub at her horn, and she offers him a high five.]

"Uggghhhh..."

Melli is clearly having a hard time accepting he lost, let alone coming to heal Toxicroak. But eventually he comes up with something he can stomach to say.

"...I just sensed I was wasting my valuable time remaining here, and so I sped things up for the both of us. Since I value the Almighty Sinnoh's blessings so much! ...And wouldn't you know it. I found a spare one of these in my pocket. I don't even need it!"

He also hands you a Full Restore instead of doing it himself. But of course, his Full Restore is a topical lotion and not the spray kind, and it's in an old-fashioned jar.

Of course. Thank you, Melli. I hope you and Ingo meet again somehow, someday.

[Haha. Time to heal up Toxicroak! She seems to enjoy the lotioning, though mostly because Saturn is so awkward about applying it and that's funny to her. Once she's healed up, he recalls her, unsure who he'll decide to send out against the next one.]

"Someone's got to come do his job," he says, neutrally, as he sits down on the bench and crosses his arms and legs.

[That's how it is, yeah. Saturn's quiet for a moment, but in the end he just nods, lets out a breath, and heads for the next car.]

You move into the next car, where there's... no one. What? Why is this car completely empty?

But then, out of nowhere! With a twirl and a flash of her cape, Da Vinci appears out of thin air, spreading her arms wide performatively.

"Tah-dah! Who would have guessed it would be me? Congratulations! It's the beautiful, talented, Universal Genius Da Vinci!"

Ah . . . hello, Da Vinci.

[THIS IS UNEXPECTED. Well. Ingo's Da Vinci probably doesn't hate Saturn as much as the real one does?! Maybe?! He steps over to her, casually wary.]

"Yes, yes. I understand you must feel speechless in the presence of my beauty. I'll allow you a few moments to gather yourself."

It does seem that, yes, she's too busy being smug to show any animosity or particularly pointed recognition towards Saturn.

[Thank god. This is an Ingo Mind Da Vinci and not the Da Vinci whom he does have a truce with at this point, but would still really rather not face in this situation, at all.]

Thank you. You are especially beautiful in Ingo's eyes, yes.

"Are you saying I'm less-than-perfect and I need his rose-colored filter in order to touch me up to 100%? You can't possibly be saying that, so let's move on. I'm sure you're wondering why I'm standing before you today!"

Is it by any chance to tell me all the things Ingo fears you perceive as his flaws, and then have a Pokemon battle with me?

[derailer]

"You're no fun. I didn't even get to do my whole speech. But I appreciate your quick thinking. I'll be honest, my heart isn't really in it. So do you want to get to the battle?"

[Haha. He warms considerably at this, looking soft for a moment, and nods.]

I'd like nothing more. Go, Bronzong!

[He is taking a gamble. Da Vinci isn't a real Pokemon trainer. She won't have a Pokemon Ingo knows her to have had in the real world. Instead she'll have one Ingo thinks she should have . . . he's going to guess it's Electric, Fairy, Fire, or Psychic. If it's Fire he'll have to swap to Sharpedo again, but if it's any of the others, Bronzong is one of the best choices to face it.]

"Bene! Then let's go, Sigilyph!"

Sigilyph bursts out, flapping her wings with a cry.

[That's a Psychic type, right . . . Saturn isn't very familiar with this Pokemon. It's obviously Flying, so it's a good thing he didn't bring out Toxicroak. Is it Psychic? Sharpedo might have been the best choice after all, but he still has—]

Bronzong, Shadow Ball!

It is indeed Psychic, and it's reeling after that hit. There's not very much it can do it return. It puts up a Light Screen to try and delay the inevitable.

"You're more of a savvy trainer than I gave you credit for after all. You thought this through, didn't you?"

Hey, that one came from Ingo's-mind Da Vinci. That one was in Ingo's mind!

[Eat another Shadow Ball! But it's true, he's doing pretty well...that makes him smile. Ingo Da Vinci thinks so too!]

I had a guess what types of Pokémon he might associate with you, yes.

"Spectacular. So tell me. The next car is the last one. Who do you think is going to be there? Are you nervous? Excited? Ready to be free from the endless agony of self-doubt?"

Sigilyph uses Hypnosis in a last ditch effort, barely hanging on. It misses.

[Poor Sigilyph. It looks pretty cool, Saturn thinks. Maybe he should try to find one someday, if he's ever in a position again to catch Pokémon. But it's time to end this battle.]

...It can only be Emmet. I won't be losing to him. Anyway, going through this is nothing like living with it. I want to alleviate some of these anxieties while I'm here with them.
