"You sought challenging battles? Let me demonstrate to you the meaninglessness of this choice, when you are to fail."

Suddenly, the train starts moving again. The Battle Subway has begun.

Ingo's Shadow tosses a Pokeball onto the floor, and out comes a Hisuian Zoroark.

If you choose to fight, choose a Pokemon and send them out in return! Roll 2d6 for the whole battle. Super-effective moves will get +1 and STAB will also get +1.

[ what the hell happened to that Zoroark-- ]

Tch, fine then! And I will show you just how wrong you are!

[ Anyway, no, obviously that Zoroark is a different region's version, but he sure has never seen it before. By rights, he should probably swap to one of his other Pokemon, but...



Munna's been trying, and listen, Lear has grown enough as a person to recognize that. He's not so sure about this type match-up, but...! All he's ever wanted was to be acknowledged and allowed to show his strength, so surely he should extend this Pokemon the same courtesy.


All of this to say that this arc is about Munna, okay, so Munna he shall use.

Zoroark is so ready to swipe Munna with a Ghost-type move—but Munna moves first, determined to protect Lear, with a powerful Moonblast that obliterates Zoroark's HP! It's a critical hit!

Stunned, Zoroark collapses to the ground.

"Tch...! But I'm not the only one who has something to say about how he conducts himself. This is the Battle Subway. There are six others after me. You don't know what you've gotten yourself into..."

[ This Munna.......... is way more impressive than he was initially expecting? Obviously strength isn't everything (he tells himself unconvincingly), but! Wow! Unexpected! ]

So this is your true potential... I suppose I may have underestimated you some.

[ oh right, Shadow Ingo was speaking. ]

Six more? Hmph. That sounds like child's play to me. Move aside, then.

Munna is relieved to be of use. Ingo's Shadow stands aside, sitting down on one of the seats, and gesturing towards the door into the next car.

"Know your place. We shall see if you remain so cocky until the end."

Hmph. You'll see for yourself soon enough. ... Or not, since you're staying here.

[ amazing. He nods to Munna, and then steps forward.

Anyway! Onwards to the next car! ]

[derailer]

You step through the door into the next car. Here, there is again only one person waiting for you: a teenage girl.

"The lead character of this story... I'll tell you who it is! It's me, of course! But someone decided to ruin his once-in-a-lifetime chance to be my love interest! And my Doubles partner!!"

[ .......... Lear blinks. ]

... What? Are you talking about Ingo?

[derailer]

"That's right! Ingo...! He was a star student! He brought me to the prom! Everything! He was the perfect Doubles partner for me! But he just couldn't get over his stupid creepy brother!! It's fine to pair up with your brother when you're a little kid, but when you have a girlfriend, the choice is obvious, isn't it?!"

[hijinked]

[ <---- a loser without a brother or a girlfriend, trying to be empathetic and failing. ]

... Is his brother stronger than you?

"Shut up!! No way!! You're not going to get away with saying that!!"

Her rage switch has instantly flipped, and she tosses her Pokeball without further hesitation.

"Mienshao, go!"

Mienshao pops out with a haughty cry... but we all know Munna can get some good modifier bonuses against a Fighting-type.

So... that would be a yes, I presume?

[ continuing to have zero empathy over here.

Anyway, yeah, that's a pokemon he knows this time! ]

Fine then. Munna, it's time! Start this off with Psychic!

[ anyway Lear clearly flubbed this by making her way too mad because: 2d6+2 = 5 ]

"Not so fast! You know what to do, Mienshao!"

It's a Mienshao. Of course it's using Fake Out turn one. Munna flinches, unable to get off the Psychic move! Mienshao uses Detect next, just rubbing it in.

[ ohhh yeah he should've seen that coming! Good job, Lear, way to slack off and get Munna hurt! ]

Tch...!

[ by rights he should probably swap Pokemon, but also... he's always been the sort of person who wants to see things through to the end, and maybe Munna is the same way? He should at least give it the option...! ]

Munna! Do you want to see this through, or take a break?

[ this is Pokemon power of friendship-style, he's still figuring it out bit by bit. ]

Munna has lost his confidence... He droops down with a low noise, hoping maybe one of Lear's other Pokemon can take over for him.

[ honestly, valid. he gives Munna a glance, but he doesn't look upset by this. ]

Fine then. There's no need to look so upset--you've done nothing wrong. The mistake was mine.

[ ANYWAY, ROUND TWO!! ]

Staraptor, you're up! Aerial Ace, hit it hard and fast!

[ 2d6+2 (flying + STAB)! = 8! ]

Mienshao is already in battle, and used Detect last turn, so she can't do Fake Out or Detect again. Aerial Ace gets her good, but she retaliates with a High Jump Kick, that actually connects this time! It does a good amount of damage... but another Aerial Ace is sure to take her out.

[hijinked]

[ Oof, that's a brutal attack--but Lear can tell that she's on the ropes, and so he presses forward, arm thrown out to the side. ]

Staraptor, once more! Aerial Ace!

[ Avenge Munna! ]

Mienshao collapses, defeated.

"Ooohhh... Fine! But you only won because you used two different Pokemon!"

Gwen sulkily comes up to heal both Munna and Staraptor, as is tradition in the battle facilities.

[ SCOWLS. ]

Munna would have rallied and handled your Pokemon just fine if it had come down to it.

[ SO THERE!! He crosses his arms and huffs at that. ]

[derailer]

"Only because he has the type advantage!!"

She storms off to the side to sit down, leaving the path open into the next car.

[hijinked]

[ rolls his eyes! And to Munna: ]

Don't listen to her. You clearly can handle yourself.

[ But he's not going to argue with her, honestly. Too self-important for that.

ONWARDS to the next car! ]
