Neither of you were accepted easily by the other kids, but you were much more accommodating of their expectations. At first you were irritated that Emmet didn't follow your lead. But over time, you came to think that it was the rigid expectations that were in the wrong. Once you had that feeling of justification behind you, it became harder to handle anyone who spoke a negative opinion of Emmet... Being overly emotional can spill out this way, too.
