It wobbles; it could be pushed forward like the rest. But more immediately, the wobbling of the rock dislodges a Joltik, who is angry at the disturbance!

[ Well I guess it is time for Drilbur. She still pets Dedenne a lot to show she still likes her too.

2d6+3 = 13. Wow.]

Drilbur totally OWNS this Joltik, so much so that he gains another level. You could catch the Joltik if you wanted!

[fujimaru]

[ HELL YEAH SHE DOES. ]

What the heck! We're doing okay now?!

[derailer]

Dedenne cheers! We're doing okay now! We don't have to kick any other Pokemon in the face!!

The path branches to the left and right from here. Left goes up some stairs, and right seems to open up—is it draftier over there...?

[fujimaru]

[ No promises, Dedenne. ]

Mmmm...

[ She does want to know where the stairs go, but if she does, will she come back here? Unlikely. She's going to check the right fork first. ]

[derailer]

It's still foggy, but you can see that the cave starts to open up into a chasm—lower levels of the cave are exposed to you. The path you are walking on is a strip of rock stretching out to a peak over this chasm. But there's a bridge spanning it.

You think maybe there's someone on the bridge...

[fujimaru]

[ She squints into the fog, lifting a hand to shield her eyes, like that would actually do her any good. ]

Hellooooooooo?

[derailer]

"Oh, hey! You're one of our visitors, aren't you?" a man's voice calls out.

[fujimaru]

I'm definitely not native, at least... who're you?

[ Surely the right thing to do is keep approaching. ]

[derailer]

"The name's Alder." It's the man with the big hair you saw a photo of earlier on the train. "I used to be Unova's Champion, once upon a time!"

[fujimaru]

Ehhhhh, the Champion, really? That's really cool!

[ LISTEN... she is easily impressed, ]

[derailer]

"You seem to be making an impressive show of it for a newbie, too! What do you say we have a little battle? I'll give you something neat if you win."

[fujimaru]

Are you sure...? I'm a total amateur, and also I haven't had a chance to heal everyone I ran into in that cave...

[ SHE DOESN'T KNOW IF ANY OF HER POKEMON HAVE A GUTS SKILL?? IMPORTANT. ]

[derailer]

"Hmmm... How about this? I'll let you try once now, and if you win despite the disadvantage, it'll be even more impressive for you. ...But if you fail, I'll heal your Pokemon and let you try one more time. Fair?"

[fujimaru]

Mmmm... I'd rather you heal them first. Win or lose, I don't want to ask someone to fight when they're not at their best, you know?

[derailer]

"All right, all right. You have a lot of love for your Pokemon. That's the kind of love and consideration a trainer needs."

He strides over to meet you partway across the bridge, healing your Pokemon completely!

[fujimaru]

[ whoaaaaaaaa! She's very impressed. ]

That's so cool...!

[derailer]

"That's nothing. You haven't even started the battle yet."

He strides back across the bridge a ways, causing it to sway slightly over the chasm.

"All right! Volcarona—go!"

[fujimaru]

--Fast!!

[ BUT IT IS DRILBUR'S TIME TO SHINE AGAIN... 2d6+4 = 11. ]

[derailer]

Drilbur has the clear advantage: besides the strength he has built, he knows Rock-type moves, which are 4x effective against Volcarona. A Rock Slide collapses on Volcarona, and it's not able to avoid flinching to do any significant damage to Drilbur before it's done for.

"Ahhh... See, you would have won either way. Congratulations!"

[fujimaru]

It's not like I knew for sure!

[ But she ruffles the top of Drilbur's head, beaming. ]

And besides... even if we would've won otherwise, I still would have felt bad asking anyone to fight when injured. Especially after you said you could help.

[derailer]

"It wasn't the fairest of me. Here—take this as your reward."

He holds out a tablet engraved with the words: "The power of defeated giants infuses this plate."

You have obtained a Flame Plate!

"I could help you a little more, if you like. Getting out of here, I mean."

[fujimaru]

--Oh. Yes please, and thank you.

[ She doesn't want to go through that cave again, if she can avoid it. Please. ]

[derailer]

He hands you an Escape Rope. "Things work pretty conveniently in some ways around here. Just pull that rope taut a little, and you should get right back to the station."
